Kartell is re-designing the 4801 chair originally designed by Joe Colombo & placing it on exhibition at the New York City Gallery in an exhibition dedicated to Joe Colombo.

The new version of the chair has already been displayed in many museums & exhibitions already..

A BIG welcome back to all our new second and third years!!! We are so happy to welcome them back with open arms & big smiles.

Welcome to the new first years, both Interior Design & Decorating, we know they have made the right choice just by the wonderful girls & boys boxes they have been making for THE RED CROSS CHILDEREN'S HOSPITAL!!

We really did kick off the year with a large amount 'BANG, BANG' this year as the 1st years students built their boxes from scratch out side in the courtyard at THE OLD BICUIT MILL. The week has been filled with fun, laughter, some spillages & a huge amout of hard work, all to a great result with some beautiful boxes starting to develop...

Doing it Gatsby style...

It is that time of the year when everything and everyone is racing towards the finish line, a.k.a December beach holiday. But not before finishing of the last big projects, for the third years it is a culmination of their three years at BHC. So it is safe to say that tentions, and printing accounts will be running high.

To bid the 3rd years farewell we had a Gatsby Dance, very original we know, but dress-ups are always fun, even if it is the upteenth time that you come as Al Capone. The 2nd years did a great job with the dance, they arranged everything from the venue, welcome drinks and even an in-house photographer (thank you Mr. Volkmann)!

It was the perfect spring evening in Camps Bay and everyone cam dressed in their gatsbyesque gear, feather headbands, pearls, and the guys especially loved their hats! The dance floor was pumping, the drinks were flowing and all-in-all everyone had a ball!

Wonder what amazing original dress-up we'll have next year? ;)

The Desmond Tutu Colour Wall

With spring in the air, colour is on everyone’s mind, especially the students and facilitators at BHC! For Creative Week Cape Town, BHC School of Design decided to do something a little different, something interactive. We wanted to get the community involved in the production of an art work, that would be colourful, vibrant relevant and bring joy to the community for some time to come.

As Bishop Tutu’s 80^th birthday was coming up 2 weeks after Creative Week, we decided to involve the people at the Neighbourhood Good’s Market to fill in the outline of the bishop’s face with paint swatches. On Saturday the 17th of September, visitors to The Old Biscuit Mill had the opportunity to glue colour swatches on the face. The art work was welcomed by the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation Youth Centre in celebration of his birthday on the 7^th October 2011.

Worm Design Properties sponsored the sheet of MDF we used to draw an outline of Desmond Tutu’s face, and Dulux sponsored the hundreds and hundreds of paint samples used to fill in his face in a pop-art style.

Thank you to all who helped to ‘colour’ in the artwork.

The current 3rd year Interior Design students received a brief to create a prototype of a new stool design, which needed to be funky and innovative...

They came up with some interesting, cute and definitely innovative designs.

The designers are as follows (in order): Saskia Bouwer; Kelly Adami; Hendre Bloem; Simone Potter and Tim Richert.

Coffee and Cake..

It's the last week of term :) ...

and we are all looking forward to a 3 week holiday and to celebrate that we are now half way through our last year we as a class are going to have Coffee and Cake at the Artisan Baker, which is just around the corner of the Old Biscuit Mill.

After the holiday we are all going on our internships. We have all been placed in a company where we will be doing work experience for 4 weeks. We are all very excited but nerves are starting to set in.

I would like to wish all my class mates Good Luck with their Internships and have an awesome holiday!

Hello everyone,

Above 3rd years at boeresports 2011

Nice to meet you all, please bare with me as this is my first time posting the 3rd years blog as their class representative, but I am looking forward to posting more updates soon.

First I would like to wish Good Luck to Tasmin Love who is going to Jo-burg tomorrow for the Design Achievers.

Here is an update on what the third year have been busy with in PID.

We have done 4 projects that are for competitions.

Caesarstone was our first project where we had to design a Domestic home using Caesarstone materials. The brief stated to design a home that is based around five elements: Sleep, Eat, Live, Soul and Commercial. The brief was challenging however very interesting especially as there was a limitation in the size of the house. The final designs produced and presented by the students were of high standard and very innovative.

The 5 best designs have been chosen and will be entered in the compeition in August. Congratulations to Saskia Bouwer, Simone Potter, Hendrik Bloem, Tarquin van der Westhuizen and Tim Richert.

PG Bsion was our second project where we had to design a retail store for Stoned Cherrie's product range Love Movement. Stoned Cherrie is owned by South African fashion Designer Nkhensani Nkosi. This project was lots of fun and challenging and all students designed stunning original work.

The 5 best designs have been chosen and will be entered in the compeition in August. Congratulations to Saskia Bouwer, Simone Potter, Hendrik Bloem, Tarquin van der Westhuizen and Tim Richert.

During our Easter Holiday some students chose to enter the LG Kitchen Competition where the brief stated to design a futuristic eco-friendly kitchen. This was an International competition where the winner was sent to Dubai to represent South Africa.

Congratulations to Tarquin van der Westhuizen who won from our college and went to Dubai. She said that it was a fun and wonderful experience but was a bit short as she was only there 3 days.

Congratulations to Abegail Williams for coming second in the LG competition and winning a LG SolarDOM oven/microwave.

I, Simone van der Vinne, was the Student Ambassador for this competition, where I was the liaison between the students and LG, and for my efforts I am also receiving a LG SolarDOM oven/microwave as a thank you gift.

We are all very grateful for the opportunities that have been given to us by BHC.

The last competition we all designed for was the ELLE Decoration Solve Competition where we designed a stool that told a story. This stool must also be manufactured which all the students are busy with at the moment and we will be handing in our final product at the end of term. We are all very excited to see the final results in the real life sized prototypes.

At the moment we are all busy with our Commercial brief where we must design a Cooking School and Restaurant in one. We are all very motivated and inspired to hand in a wonderful and innovative final product.

After a grueling first mid-year exam, the first years are looking more motivated and enthusiastic about design. It could possibly be that they had a wake-up call during the exams and realised that they need to pull-up those designer socks, or that they realise that they are more than half way through their 1^st year at BHC. (Can I hear a ‘Whoop Whoop’!)

So, to inspire you all a bit more, there is an amazing webiste http://www.notcot.org/. There they feature the most up to date design ideas in technology, fashion, architecture and design.

Lago launched a couple of new products at the Milan Design Week in April and the designs are truly amazing. Their website showcases various exciting concepts for shelving as well as an awesome cacoon-like bed, which you can just 'wrap' yourself in.

Kitchen Confidential...

Recently the 1st years received a brief to re-design the kitchen of Mr & Mrs Casper (Lindi's folks), they were taken to site and had to survey the existing kitchen and take photographs of the site.

The brief was to re-design the kitchen for a couple in their early 50's with 3 children of whom 2 are currently still living at home. Over the past years they have completed several renovations to their home and have now reached the kitchen area which they want to renovate.

They love entertaining guests and have dinner parties with friends and family and thus need a kitchen that can accommodate their needs. They want to be able to socialize with guests whilst preparing mouthwatering meals in the kitchen.

The students had to come up with a design for the kitchen which is extremely neat, practical and beautiful. They also require a scullery and and a laundry area within the kitchen. The various adjacent living areas also needed to be considered, such as the outside area, dining room and the living room.

The Intern Diaries

On the 17th of May the 3rd year students began their experiential learning endeavour. All the students were placed at various companies in order to learn as well as absorb as much information as they possibly could. It was also an opportunity to enjoy their time away in an environment which they will be part of in the near future.

The morning of the first day had a few if not the entire group a little nervous, as many were stepping into unknown territory. For most of the students their first day went well. It was a day to settle into their allocated company, find their feet and begin to explore what went on in the company. We quickly became aware of what our responsibilities were going to be during our time spent with the various companies.

Some of the students were dropped straight into the deep end and found themselves on site, creating mood boards, and helping other employees with the work they were currently working on. Others had a bit of a slower start with less demanding work during their internship.

We started a Facebook group where we all could share our thoughts and internship experiences with each other and also to support and advise each other. It was appropriately called: The Intern Diaries...

Here are some of the first day experiences which the students shared on the group.

"Hi guys. Today was not as bad as I expected! Yeah, yeah, yeah! I know you all told me so! Did mood boards, went on site for a short while, did a little bit of admin, and observed. Not quite so nervous for tomorrow. I hope you guys all had a great day." - Beverley Bradnick

"1st day started off with a bang, even though I waited for an hour to get sorted, Pierre Cronje is a really really nice company, very chilled. I am busy designing a 7 meter riempie bench for Le Mont, exciting!" - Toni Alexander

"I am the Kerkythea king at Plan-It Designs... Drew up a mezzanine floor (plan, elevations and section), took me an hour and a half. Chilled for the rest of the day, so I must say, first day was intensely chilled, going to site tomorrow at CW, retail just might be my friend!" - Ryan Groves

"Okay, so I got to MMI this morning met the coolest people and the immediately jumped into getting 5 1.5x 1m sample boards ready for 17h00 only to be told at 14h00 that the samples they have, are too outdated and the vice president's visit has been postponed. Then I got shown which details I had to 'clean up' (pretty much re-do), then got told I wouldn't have access to the server until tomorrow, so its an early day for me...but awesome experience so far." - Dean Adams

Personally, i had become part of the company very quickly; the office staff were great and made me feel right at home from day one. I was sent to meetings and designed various features for the project the company was working on at the time. After the first day many students had found their way in their companies and started to enjoy what they were working on.

The idea of a full days' work was something I think we all needed to get used to. Each company had their own hours but on the whole, most days started around 8:30 am and ended at around 16:00 pm or 17:00 pm. The days were very long, and the hour lunch break was well received when it came around. Some of the students however had a bit of a rough week.

Week two got underway very quickly, being so busy most of the days, the days seemed to fly by in a flash. Week three was upon us before we had even blinked. Most of the students worked on AutoCAD or SketchUp and then used various rendering programs. At some of the companies there were strict layout rules and the manner in which something was designed has to be done exactly the same throughout all the drawings produced.

With week three done and the last week on its way, holidays were close and on everyone's minds. The long hours had really drained the students but at the same time showed them what the industry has to offer.

I think all of the students had a good experience and learnt a lot whilst enjoying their time away from college and in the design industry. It is definitely a worth while program which all students should go on in order to see what the industry is like and the manner in which things work away from the comfort of our everyday college environment.

Sketching Outing at Groot Constantia

As part of their sketching and history the first years went on an outing on the 4th June to Groot Constantia. There they had to sketch an exterior perspective of one of the buildings on the estate and as part of their History Studies they could actually see the Cape Vernacular Architecture which they have just completed in class.

They sat at the Oak Treed Avenue to view and sketch the surrounds and after all their hard sketching they enjoyed some scones and tea at the main restaurant. They also had a lot of fun going around the Estate and seeing some of the antique furniture in the main house as well as climbing in the trees.

Throwing the leaves in the air is Beaunita, Travis and Carri.

As always there was a bit of action when two baboons chasing each other came bearing down at great speed directly towards Sue (the History lecturer), who then just stood there in amazement, luckily they ran passed...

The students really produced some amazing work and paid a lot of attention to detail in their sketches, they also used different methods to indicate the various textures which they observed.
